Looking toward 2014

Today I took a look at the realities of my 2013 running.  I have to fess up to the fact that this was the third lowest yearly mileage I have ever clocked—just over 800 miles. On the other hand, my mileage was a bit higher than the preceding five year period.  Being a nerd for numbers I can claim 32, 574 miles of running over the last 31 years. This means that I have made it around the world 1.3 times and would be beyond Tokyo on my second westward circuit of the globe.  So much for useless data!!

On the other hand, my mantra is "You can't manage what you don't measure." So it's good to step back periodically and size up one's running performance.  Due to my anal dedication to measurement, I can share with you that the upcoming Winter Park 10K will be my 300th competitive race (if I am still functional)!  At age 79, every step of running is a gift!!!

The Year in Review

The Sunday group has steadily grown over the past half dozen or so years after almost totally disappearing with the introduction of pay to play training programs in the area. (These programs can be a valuable tool for training.) A few highlights:

  • This year we welcomed new arrivals including Abby, Eamonn, Jen, Katy, Simone, Sarah and Ralph. (Eammon joined us all the way from Ireland via Africa!)
  • Our weekly e-mails currently are sent to 107 recipients, but it is a bloated list.  Five years ago, there were only about 30 recipients, so we've tripled over the five year period.
  • About half of the people on the distribution are regulars. Some have moved (as far as Australia) and have asked to be kept on the list.  Others have simply disappeared.

I would like to make a plea to those who no longer wish to be part of the group to give me your permission to drop you from our roster.  Keep in mind that the weekly reports are posted to my blog on the ORC website.

Better yet, come on out and join us once again.  It would be a great way to set the tone for 2014. Besides, we miss you!

Thought for the new year

Happy New Year and hope to see you soon!
