January 5th Run

Today's Run

We kicked off 2014's first run with at least two dozen runners on a perfect day for running. That is a very healthy start for the New Year.  Hopefully also a harbinger for the coming months!

There were at least three people whom I had not met before and I'm hoping they will become regulars.

Also joining us for the first time was my friend Arwa. Like Eamonn, Arwa also grew up in Ireland

After our run, we had a healthy turnout at Paneras for breakfast.  All in all, a really great start to 2014.

The International Desk

Apologies and congratulations to Carly!! First, I failed to include Carly as a new member of the group during 2012.  And we congratulate Carly on her selection to represent the club in Urayasu, Japan towards the ten of this month. Have a great race, Carly, and please let us hear about your experience!

Kerry, who is Carly's sidekick, also ran today.  Kerry represented the ORC in Japan last year.

In addition I missed the fact that Vilma reappeared after returning to the area So all told, we had ten new runners join us last year!

Our Sunday Runners E-mail distribution list

I had an interesting response to last week's posting:  Paul Yacobellis e-mailed me as follows from Australia:

"I would love to stay on the list, even though I am in Australia.  It's great to get your emails each week! Keep on running,"

Paul is a mere 9300 miles or so around the globe from us in the land of down-under where it is now mid-summer.  It's great to hear from you Paul.  Happy New Year!  (

Ironically, I followed a link in Paul's e-mail and found a posting about a kangaroo hopping loose around an Orlando neighborhood!  My, how the world has shrunk!! I'm not used to getting my local news via Australia!!

Great to hear from you Paul!

Here is what I saw when I ran is Sydney some years ago.  Really! Hundreds of these cute little critters hanging overhead from trees in the Botanical Garden

Speaking of Australia, it occurred to me that we have not seen Luke and Bronte in quite a while.  Luke and Bronte relocated here from Australia during 2013 and both have come out to run with us briefly.  Please let us know how you two are doing.

From Lynne (Our Pentagon based, Irish Dancer, Runner & ex-local resident)

"Wow, there are some fast runners out there!  I hope your half marathon goes well.  Saturday I'll be dancing in the Southeastern Regional Irish Dance Championships.  They're in the DC are this year, but Orlando next year." Lynne also reports that she and son Sean are planning to do the Wine Country half marathon in Virginia in the spring.

Danny

Danny reappeared this morning with his son after a long absence. You may recall that he was one of our members (Lytle the other) who came up injured while training for the Chicago Marathon.  Great to see you, Danny.  Hope you continue to heal.

Bob is Back!

Bob returned from Vermont yesterday, barely escaping the bad weather in the Northeast as they drove south.  Below is what Bob left behind in Vermont.  In fact it is about 12 degrees below zero at his home in Woodstock today. Brrrr!  Good timing, Bob and welcome back!

Thought for the week (and maybe the full year 2014)

Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals.   Unknown

Have a great week!

Jack
