October 14 Runs

Today's Run (s)

UCF Five Miler

I ran the third race of the Track Shack series, a 5 Miler at UCF.  Liz was the only one whom I got to see, and that was before the race.  I found myself at the start line with Susan Paul, my secret weapon in keeping this aged body on the road.  Susan is a first class massage therapist and runs Track Shack's training programs.  She apparently was there for fun, since she had knocked off 18 miles yesterday.  I was honored to have the running company of Donna, a 55 year old cancer survivor.  She was an inspiration and kept me going when I felt like slowing down.

In addition to Liz, I know that Barbara and Rose competed and that Rose was first in her age group.  Congratulations. Rose!  Did anyone else compete?

A weird statistic:  As you might guess, my days of PR's are long gone.  My goal in each race is to try to match my prior years' race time.  I've never had this happen before, but my five mile times today, last year and the year before are almost identical, (just a 16 seconds spread over the three years), and today's the fastest of the three!)  There's always hope.

Park Avenue

Christine and Dave both checked in by e-mail.  They report that we had close to a dozen people show up today.  Christine reports that our visitor from NY showed up today.  Does anyone know how he fared on the run?  I assume he didn't get lost out there!

Christine reports that she and Dede got in some walking mileage this morning.  Christine is doing remarkably well and got in 17 miles of walking this week with some intermittent 30 second spurts.  After her cruise next Sunday, it looks like she will be back in the swing of things. Amen!!

Had a message from Ian who has moved to South Florida.  He hopes to get up here soon and run with us and join his old coffee buddies!

The return of Marty!!  I had a zinger e-mail awaiting me when I returned home today.  Marty claims that he showed up for the first time in years and years and found me AWOL.  Welcome back, Marty!  This has been quite a journey for you since you stopped running and had your horrific bike accident.   I'm sure the entire group celebrates your remarkable return to health and fitness! Kim ran for a bit with Marty.

Next Sunday's Blanket Collection

Just a reminder about next Sunday, October 21st.  I hope many of you can come join us to show our concern for the homeless and celebrate our fifth year of collecting blankets.  Dave will be providing his truck for transporting blankets to the Coalition for the Homeless.  (Dave, see my separate e-mail please)

Billy, who has been injured for some time now, also volunteered his van and will be joining us next Sunday for the first time in a while.  We look forward to seeing you, Billy!

Have a great week!

Jack
