August 26th Run

Today's Run

We had a light turnout today with barely a dozen runners.  Liz invited Cheryl, a neighbor of hers to join us and we were delighted to have Carolyne out to run for the first time in a while.  It was a bit soupy, but the breezes picked up after a while.

An expected visitor from NJ failed to show.  Hopefully we will have better luck in September when we are expecting visitors from Australia and West Va.

Next Sunday Christine and Dede plan to join us and do an inaugural walk.  We are considering inviting others in the community to join them.  We look forward to seeing both of you!

Local Runner wins Ultraman Canada

"U.S. competitors Stephen Stafford and Consuela Lively won Ultraman Canada in a challenging three days made tougher by unrelenting mid-90 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures. Lively, 41, of Winter Park Florida, finished the 3-day, 325-mile stage triathlon, held on much of the roads and trails of Ironman Canada, in 27:25:23 with a narrow-for-Ultraman 29 minutes and 3 seconds margin of victory over runner-up Kat Calder-Becker, 48, of Montreal." While I have never met Consuela, she and her triathlon training group "Tri with Sway" have been participating in our annual blanket collection for homeless men at the Coalition for the Homeless shelter in downtown Orlando.

Fifth Annual Blanket Collection

Speaking of which, I am starting to gear up for our Fifth Annual Blanket Collection initiative.  I'm thinking about Sunday October 21 as the main collection date. Local running groups again will be invited to bring blankets that morning and join us for a run.  We have drawn a nice crowd of runners for the event in prior years.

I invite all of our Sunday runners and the ORC membership at large to participate in this outreach effort.  Towards that end I encourage the ORC Board members to dedicate themselves to this effort again this year and get the word out to the Club membership.

Also, I invite each of you to consider inviting members of your church and/or other groups with which you are involved.  (For example, St. Margaret Mary Church participates annually and has collected a significant number of blankets over a several week period each October)

Have a great week!

Jack

PS:  I've attached a schedule of group members planning long races this season.  It may help to find company for your longer runs.  Let me know if you we missed you!
