August 11 Run

Sunday's Run

I'm finally getting around to report on yesterday's run.  I was too busy celebrating my 79th Birthday yesterday with my family!

Twenty-two people showed up, continuing the recent trend of larger turnouts. We hosted Tracy, a visitor from Columbia SC who is training for the Savannah marathon in October. Jennifer Abby and Andrew also returned after joining the group last Sunday

We had a new arrival, Marisol, a student at UCF who is training for an October ultra in Sebastian and hopes to cover 100 miles!  She arrived late but caught up with a half dozen of the regulars for breakfast at Paneras. Luke, our recent arrival from Australia also popped in to report on his trial run with Teresa William's faster group. It sounds like he has found a more compatible group given his speed.

Both of the Ocoee girls (Debbie and Helene) showed up as a team for the first time in a while. Great to see both of you!  They are putting in their first day of school today.

Bob Raymond sent me an e-mail from Yalta where he ran three miles. He's on a Russian cruise.  First e-mail I've ever received an e-mail from Russia!

Pikes Peak Ascent next Weekend

Two of our runners are doing Pikes Peak on Saturday (Wendy and Colorado Jack).   Jack is going to catch up with Wendy before the race and has been of invaluable help with his advice on running the ascent.  Jack should know, because at age 70, this is his 20th Pikes Peak Ascent!!!  That's phenomenal!

Here is a comment from Jack on his recent training run:

"I was on top today: 33 deg, 10-15 mile hr. wind, wind chill around 20 deg. ice and occasional patches of snow/hail on Barr Trail. I left top at 11 am, the clouds had arrived, it was very foggy and cold! Hopefully race day will be nice (around 45 deg on top and no wind!)."

I found his advice to Wendy so fascinating that I decided to attach it to this e-mail for those who may be curious about the challenging race conditions. Also, his comments on weather conditions may be just what the doctor ordered for those of us who are sick of the summer heat.  I guess it's a matter of choosing your poison! (Altitude and freezing vs. Flat and Hot)

Good luck to Wendy and Jack next Saturday!!!

Have a great week.

Jack
