July 1 Run

Eyes on Colorado Springs

The attention of three of our group has been focused on the Waldo Canyon Colorado wildfire over the past week.  Jack Ramsey, our newest member, returned home a few weeks back to Manitou Springs, a near-in suburb of Colorado Springs.  He and his wife were soon evacuated when the wildfire began to threaten their neighborhood.  Meanwhile, Leslie and her family bought a home in Monument near Colorado Springs and will shortly be relocating.  Finally, I have been following the news very closely because Mary and I plan to vacation in CS at the end of the month.

The good news is that Jack sent me an e-mail yesterday indicating that he is now back in his home and has had no fire or smoke damage.  Amen!  Firefighters have gotten the blaze 30% contained as of Saturday and have beefed up resources to continue that trend.  The bad news is that about 350 homes have burned and several people have lost their lives.

So it looks like Leslie has no need for worry and that the Gallaghers will execute their vacation plans!  Hopefully the three of us will be able to orchestrate a run together.  I am at a total disadvantage because I am by far the slowest of the group and don't know any shortcuts out there.

Pictures from Jack.  I believe the picture on the right is Jack's house, which sustained no damage.  Amen!

Today's Turnout

We had a baker's dozen show up today, with the ladies in the majority. We welcomed Ed back after a long absence.  The temp was in the mid 70's at the start and it did feel like the start of summer.

The superintendent of schools at D11 in Colorado Springs is a friend/colleague of mine from here in Orange County. His was evacuated 10 days ago from his home on a ridge northwest of downtown CS. Ten of his next-door/nearby neighbors' homes burned to the ground. His is still standing but heat and smoke damage may make salvage impossible. He gets to ride one of his own school buses with other evacuated residents today as they get to drive by their streets to see the damage up close. Nobody is allowed off the buses.
