Catching up after two weeks AWOL

Jack is back. Before I regale you with war stories, I am pasting in Dave Berry's two weekly reports on May 30 and June 6. Thanks much, Dave. I am sorry I was not around for the fun and am impressed by the clarity and completeness of your coverage!! I missed you guys. Since I am not sure whether Dave sent his coverage to all of you, his coverage is pasted below:

May 30: Jack, we missed you this morning, but 10 of us forged through anyway. Our UK friend Richard Bruce showed up after flying in yesterday evening. He and Glenn ran the 10 mile route and of course Kim who zoomed by us all at the 4 mile water stop. Billy challenged Glenn until Seth’s house and then wisely turned back. Mark, Brad, new girl Susan who moved from Tallahassee (but is really a closet Gator), and I turned at Mizell. That age adjusted course Seth showed me (skipping the Via Tuscany loop) came in handy as I was a little under the weather from breathing too much saw dust over the last couple of days. Putting down laminate flooring at your house seems like a much better thing before you start. Somewhere along the course was Dylan and Chris, not sure where they went as we didn’t see them at the water stop. Although it was a beautiful Winter Park morning it wasn’t quite the same without the high energy of Jack (up North for a covered bridge 1 / 2 marathon with Bob) and Seth running an Ultra in Melbourne, and Cheryl and Marcus taking leave to catch a Yankee ball game in N.Y. As far as the rest of you, I’m guessing you had holiday plans that interfered with your running schedule. The weather is still nice at 7 am so hopefully see more people next week.

June 6: Another Jack-less Sunday for the dozen of us that showed up this morning. Half the group; Jake, Amy, Mikko, Billy, Jari, and I were all up early yesterday to help with or run the ORC Race into the Summer 5k out at Blanchard Park yesterday. Results are posted on the www.orlandorunnersclub.org site. Several Sunday morning names can be found on the results page. Also in attendance today were Don, Chris, Dillon, Juergen, Kim, and our UK friend Richard Bruce for the second week in a row. He’ll be heading over to Sarasota with his family later this week to continue on with his vacation so we won’t see him again till his next trip across the pond. We’re all looking forward to next week to hear an inspirational Jack story about the covered bridge Marathon . Also want to hear how nice the weather was up North compared to our very muggy day here.

Sorry I missed our UK visitor, Richard Bruce, for two weeks in a row. Richard has now run with us four times and deserves an award, particularly after showing up the next day after a flight across the pond! Let's make him an honorary member of ORC!

After an idyllic week in the White Mountains, Mary and I headed over to Woodstock, where we were guests of Bob R. and his wife. Also, Charline, who graduated to the Big Boys & Girls group (who muster a half block up the street from us on Sunday), flew in from Nice, France and ran the Covered Bridges Half Marathon with us. (During the prior week or so, Charline had flown from California to Calgary, ran the last half of a marathon with her sister, then flew off to Nice, France for some vacation and back to Woodstock for the race last Sunday. Try that one sometime!! Imagine, nine time zones and two half marathons in little more than a week.

The CBHM, as the locals refer to it, was an interesting elixir of challenging hills, some dirt roads, covered bridges and rain the whole way! (except when crossing the bridges). In fact, though, it was easier than running our route in the Florida heat. Temp was in the low 60's. There were close to 20 runners from Orlando, many of them from our Sunday sister group. As usual, Bob whipped me by at least twelve minutes in or age group. Unfortunately, our age group was a catch-all 70 plus. Despite this, Bob managed a third place, the same as he did last year. I run with Bob to practice humility. Good thing he is such a close friend, otherwise I might be inclined to trip him! I happily settled for a 2:40 race. Bob and I were the two oldest racers on the course. Bob, as many of you know, spends six months in Winter Park and six months in Woodstock.

Very much looking forward to seeing you all Sunday.

I really enjoyed my two runs with the ORC, you have a great bunch of runners and just as in 2008 they all made me feel very welcome and I look forward to running with them again in future, hopefully next time I will get to meet you again. I hope you don’t mind but I have copied this email to everyone on your email as I couldn’t remember all the names of the runners I met and just wanted to say thanks to them all, my visits to Florida wouldn’t be the same now without the Sunday morning runs. I have signed up for the ORC newsletter so will be able to see how you are getting on, I run for the Isle of Wight Road Runners in the UK and they have a web page and forum that anyone can view, this is the link, http://www.isleofwightroadrunners.co.uk/default.asp. We are a small and friendly club so please feel free to have a look.

It sounds as though you had a good run in the CBHM, if you or any of the other members of the ORC ever visit the Isle of Wight (home) or London (I am in London Monday to Friday), please don’t hesitate to contact me, it would be a pleasure to return the hospitality I have been shown by you all.

Kind regards,

Richard Bruce
