January 20th Run

Chris ended up in Denver this week for some mile high altitude training in freezing weather.  Bob is hunkered down in Havana.   Yes, Havana! We likely will hear a few war stories when he returns later this week from our man in Havana.

Chris reports a modest turnout today, including our two friends from the Baltimore Runners Club who have visited us the past three years.

I was a no-show due to a nasty viral infection which made me feel like the flu may have been a superior alternative.  The good news is that I have turned a corner!  The next question is whether to tackle the 5.2K next Saturday.

Disney post mortems

All of our Disney racers have checked in—mostly by e-mail, but my friend Geralynn called to share her joy.  She ran with her daughter and an old neighbor from Casselberry.  This was her daughter Jacklynn's first half marathon and they had a ball.

Gina, who is bumping around in the northeast on Storm Sandy recovery efforts by FEMA still plans to run the Melbourne Music Marathon the first weekend in February.

Irrepressible Wendy is planning to do the Asheville Marathon on the Biltmore Estate ground on Sunday March 3.

Mark reports that he was a last minute substitution entry for the Disney Half and did a sub-2 hours!  Congratulations, Mark!  Mark has resolved that he will be back out on Sundays after an absence.  Also, thanks for the chicken soup offer, Mark!!!

Debbie & Helene

Debbie provided a riveting account of their first marathon escapade.  Both of them experienced physical problems but endured and conquered.  Debbie says both of them are of a mind frame to tackle the distance again!

Christine

I would urge you to read Christine's great blog covering her marathon.  It's at: http://www.randomhangers.com/2013/01/13/today-i-ran-the-disney-marathon/

I probably shouldn't go there, but she relates two incidents which to me epitomize Disney's callous attitude toward it participants.  My reaction stems from my only Disney marathon experience when I ran their second marathon at age 60.  I had to get up at 2:00AM, spend several hours in queues in freezing weather and was subjected to further indignities by a half hour delayed starting time (so that they could do their Goofy routine.)  Sound like nothing has changed.

Long Range Race Planning

Dylan reports that he has already committed to run Space Coast next December with a running and blogging friend from Ft. Worth.

Hope to see you next Sunday!
